Anasazi / Mimbres Leaping Hare Bowl Replication
The leaping hare was a theme that showed up frequently in Mimbres bowl art. The extinct Mimbres culture (circa 200 to 1150 A.D.) once flourished in the southwestern deserts of North America. The Mimbres are best known for the small to medium-sized ceramic bowls upon which they painted the natural world which surrounded them. This replication bowl depicts a rabbit that appears to be leaping over a crescent moon. The symbolism and its meaning are lost through the passage of time, and we can only conject and speculate as to the story this bowl once told. Starling Black Studio attempts to preserve the prehistoric arts by creating authentic looking replications of original artifacts. This bowl was handmade and painted with homemade brushes from hair and the yucca plant. Rich fire clouds and a smoky patina adorn the bowl’s surface, a result of the open flame and pit firing process. If you enjoy the beauty and rawness of prehistoric art, then I believe you will not be dissatisfied with “Leaping Hare Bowl” as it appears very much like an original artifact. Thank you for looking.
