Anasazi / Mimbres Replication Bowl of the Starry, Starry Night

US$95.00

Up for sale is a replication of a prehistoric Mimbres design that was originally created approximately circa 1100 A.D. by the now extinct Mimbres culture. Where the Mimbres went, why they left can only be left to conjecture as the only written record to their existence was the symbolism painted upon small to medium sized ceramic bowls that were left as a legacy from a bygone era. What we do know about the culture is they celebrated the natural world that surrounded them as evidenced by the wonderful stylized pictorial ceramic bowls they left behind. This bowl, “Starry, Starry Night” was recreated at Starling Black Studios in the White Mountains of Arizona. The design is deceptively simple, although when I first tried to reproduce it over twenty years ago, I did not have the ability to do so. Indeed, it was the first Mimbres design I ever tried to replicate. As experience was gained, I eventually was successful at the replication of this wonderful vessel. The design is rich with interlocking swirls, festoons, and other astronomical symbolism to the point that no other description would suffice but “Starry, Starry Night” in deference of Vincent van Gogh’s famous painting of the same title and subject matter. Possibly Don McLeane said it best when he wrote, “Starry, starry night, flaming flowers that brightly blaze, swirling clouds of violet haze…”  This design will also adorn our mountain home as it reflects the vivid starlight nights we ponder when the moon is low, and the sky is dark. “Starry Starry Night” is one of my favorite Mimbres designs and is a tribute to the fine art that was once created by this extinct culture.
